About Nicoletta Braschi

Edited by the community

Black-haired and brown-eyed, Nicoletta Braschi stands 5'5" tall. She is an Italian actress and producer with a career that has spanned over four decades. Born in Cesena, Emilia-Romagna, she studied at Rome's Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she met her future husband, Roberto Benigni, in 1980. Her first film role was in Benigni's 1983 comedy Tu mi turbi. She later appeared in two Jim Jarmusch films, Down by Law and Mystery Train. Her breakthrough came with the Italian comedy Johnny Stecchino (1991), in which she played a mobster's girlfriend. But it was her role in Life is Beautiful (1997) that launched her into the international spotlight. She played the wife of an Italian Jew imprisoned in a concentration camp, a performance that earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination as part of the cast. That same year, she starred in Ovosodo, a role that won her a David di Donatello award, Italy's equivalent of the Oscars. The film showed her range as a depressed teacher who encourages a struggling student. In 2005, she starred in and produced The Tiger and the Snow, a love story set during the Iraq War. That was her last film appearance until 2018's Happy as Lazzaro. Beyond acting, she has served on juries at major film festivals. In 2002, she was a member of the jury at the 52nd Berlin Film Festival, and in 2013 she joined the Cinéfondation and short films jury at the 66th Cannes Film Festival. Braschi has also worked in theatre, touring Italy in 2010 with Tradimenti, based on Harold Pinter's Betrayal. She is a natural brunette with brown eyes and no tattoos, only simple ear piercings. Her work often pairs her with Benigni, both on screen and behind the scenes. She has been active since 1983 and is now 66 years old. Her career has moved between comedy, drama, and even international cinema, always with a grounded, natural presence. She remains a respected figure in Italian cinema, known for her collaboration with one of the country's most beloved filmmakers. In recent years, she has continued to take on selective projects, returning to the screen after a long hiatus. Her performances often bring a quiet strength to her characters, whether they are comic or tragic. She is a rare actress who has found success both in her native Italy and abroad. With a career that spans 43 years, she has become a staple of Italian film. Her most famous role remains that in Life is Beautiful, a film that still resonates with audiences worldwide. She has also produced films, showing her ability to shape stories from behind the camera. Her work is characterized by a deep commitment to her craft, though she prefers to let her roles speak for themselves.
