Nichelle Nichols

With dark hair, brown eyes, and a petite 5'3" frame, Nichelle Nichols had a look that stood out on mid-century television. She was born in Robbins, Illinois, and spent 61 years as an actress, from 1959 to 2020. Nichols was one of the first Black women featured in a major TV series, playing the bridge officer Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek. That role was a breakthrough. During the first season, she considered leaving for Broadway, but a conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed her mind. He told her she could not give up, as she was a vital role model for Black children and young women. She stayed, and her portrayal became a landmark of representation on screen. Nichols passed away on July 30, 2022, at the age of 89. Her career and legacy endure.
