About Mylene Demongeot
Mylène Demongeot, born Marie-Hélène Demongeot on 29 September 1935 in Nice, France, was a French actress whose career spanned from 1953 to 2022, nearly seven decades. She started acting at around 18 and quickly rose to prominence. At 21, her portrayal of Abigail Williams in The Crucible (1957) earned her a BAFTA nomination for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles and the best actress prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Demongeot also played notable roles such as Elsa in Otto Preminger's Bonjour Tristesse (1958) and Milady de Winter in Les Trois Mousquetaires (1961).
Demongeot was known as one of the blonde sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s, but she avoided typecasting by working across many genres, including thrillers, westerns, comedies, swashbucklers, period films, and pepla. She starred in films like Romulus and the Sabines (1961) opposite Roger Moore and Gold for the Caesars (1963). Her cult following comes from the Fantômas trilogy, where she played Hélène Gurn against Louis de Funès and Jean Marais in Fantômas (1964), Fantômas Unleashed (1965), and Fantômas Against Scotland Yard (1967). Thirty years later, she appeared in another successful French comedy trilogy, playing Madame Pic in Camping (2006), Camping 2 (2010), and Camping 3 (2016).
Demongeot earned two César Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, for 36 Quai des Orfèvres (2004) and French California (2006). In 2007, she became a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et de Lettres, and in 2017 she was inducted into the Légion d'Honneur as a Chevalier. She continued to work until her death from peritoneal cancer on 1 December 2022, at age 87. At that time, she was starring in Maison de retraite, a film released in 2022 that became one of the biggest box office hits in France. She left behind more than 100 screen credits across French, Italian, English, and Japanese productions. President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to her, praising her as a great figure in French cinema who could shine in all its genres.
