Mya Harrison is a musician who began her career as a dancer before discovering her vocal talent. Born in Washington, D.C., she started dance lessons at age two in 1982. After a hiatus, her passion for dance reignited in 1992. She studied tapes of tap prodigy Savion Glover and joined the dance troupe Tappers With Attitude. She later trained at the Dance Theater of Harlem, where Glover gave her a solo spot at a Kennedy Center performance. By age 15, music took over, and she honed her vocals with her father, a professional musician. He shopped her demo tape, catching the interest of University Music president Haqq Islam. At 16, she signed a recording contract.

Over the next two years, Mya prepared her debut album, collaborating with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Diane Warren, Missy Elliott, and members of Dru Hill. Released in April 1998, her self-titled debut was a mature urban R&B collection. The single "It's All About Me" with Sisqo reached number 6 on the US charts. She also appeared on Pras's "Ghetto Supastar" from the Bulworth soundtrack. In September, the album peaked at 29, and "Movin' On" with Silkk The Shocker hit number 34. "Take Me There" with BLACKstreet, Ma$e, and Blinky Blink reached number 14 in January 1999. Her "My First Night With You" failed to break the Top 50. She then recorded her sophomore album, Fear Of Flying, which featured the US Top 5 hit "Case Of The Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do)".
