About Mpule Kwelagobe
Mpule Keneilwe Kwelagobe, with her striking slim frame, black hair, and brown eyes, stands 5'10". She is a Botswanan former beauty pageant contestant, now a businesswoman and activist active since 1997. Born on Wednesday, 14th of November 1979, in Gaborone, South East, Botswana, she belongs to the Tswana ethnic group and speaks Tswana natively. Her career began as a teenager, and she has since become a prominent figure in both pageantry and advocacy.
In 1997, while still a high school student, Kwelagobe entered Miss Botswana 1997 and won, becoming the youngest woman to ever win the title at just 17. She represented Botswana at Miss World 1997, where she was unplaced. Two years later, she won the inaugural Miss Universe Botswana 1999 title, making her the first woman to represent Botswana in the Miss Universe competition. Competing in Miss Universe 1999 in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago, she advanced through the top ten and top five, ultimately winning the crown, besting first runner-up Miriam Quiambao of the Philippines and second runner-up Diana Nogueira of Spain. With this victory, Kwelagobe became the fourth black woman to win Miss Universe and the first black African to win any of the Big Four international beauty pageants.
Beyond her pageant success, Kwelagobe has dedicated herself to activism, particularly in human health rights and the fight against HIV/AIDS. After her reign, she enrolled at Columbia University in 2002 and graduated with a degree in international political economy. In 2000, she was appointed a goodwill ambassador by the United Nations, focusing on youth and HIV/AIDS. She has addressed the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Least Developed Countries conference, the World Youth Summit, and the United States House Committee on Financial Services on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, proposing a bill for a World Bank AIDS prevention trust fund. The same year, she launched the MPULE Foundation to promote behavioral change among youth in Botswana, aiming to curb HIV/AIDS spread and advocate for sexual and reproductive rights. Her contributions have been recognized with the Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award in 2001 and selection as a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in 2003, followed by being named a Young Global Leader in 2006.
Kwelagobe is also a businesswoman; she co-founded QuesS Capital LLC, a private equity firm with investments in financial services, renewable energy, and agriculture in Africa and South Asia. In 2011, she established the MPULE Institute for Endogenous Development, a New York City-based advocacy think tank focusing on green initiatives, sustainable development in agriculture, gender equity, and women's and youth empowerment. In 2015, she signed an open letter from the ONE Campaign urging Angela Merkel and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to prioritize women as heads of the G7 and AU. She also serves on the board of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. Kwelagobe's legacy is one of breaking barriers in pageantry while championing critical causes.
