Gordon was born in Los Angeles, California, to director Bryan Gordon and producer-screenwriter Jessie Nelson. She grew up acting on LA stages, performing in Fiddler on the Roof at age four and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at age five, sharing the stage with Ben Platt. Her early exposure to comedy came from watching Saturday Night Live and attending The Groundlings, which led her to pursue comedic roles. She made her film debut in the 2001 drama I Am Sam, then appeared in Bewitched (2005) and Love the Coopers (2015). In 2014, she moved to New York City to pursue acting full-time, and a year later she was cast as Nicky in the TNT series Animal Kingdom, which became her breakout role.
