About Misty Upham

Edited by the community

Misty Upham was a Blackfeet actress whose career spanned from 2002 to 2014, starting around age 19. She earned critical acclaim for her role in the 2008 film Frozen River, which brought her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. She also appeared in Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian and August: Osage County.

Born on July 6, 1982, in Kalispell, Montana, and raised in Auburn, Washington, Upham was a member of the Blackfeet Nation. Her film credits include Expiration Date, Edge of America, Skins, and Skinwalkers. In 2010, she appeared on HBO's Big Love. In 2013, she played a major supporting role in Arnaud Desplechin's Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian, which was selected in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 66th Festival de Cannes. In August: Osage County, she played the housekeeper Johnna, and she played Liz in Cake.

Upham's life was marked by trauma. She was reportedly sexually abused, assaulted, and gang-raped, first as a child and later as an up-and-coming actress by an executive at The Weinstein Company. Both she and family members reported that she suffered from depression and severe aftereffects from these traumas. On October 5, 2014, Upham left her sister's apartment on the Muckleshoot Reservation in Auburn on foot. When she was not heard from, her family voiced concerns, but the Auburn Police initially did not open an investigation, citing that she was not a missing person. On October 16, her body was found at the bottom of a cliff by a family-organized search party. The King County Medical Examiner later ruled her death was due to blunt-force injuries to her head and torso, but the manner could not be determined. Her family criticized the police response, alleging past abuse and lack of action. In 2016, a documentary, 11 Days – The Search for Misty Upham, was announced, investigating her disappearance and death. In 2017, her father publicly alleged that she was raped by a Weinstein team member at the same Golden Globes ceremony where she was honored. Upham died on October 5, 2014, at age 32. She stood 5'6" tall.
