About Mira Sorvino

Edited by the community

Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino was born on September 28, 1967, in New York City. She is an American actress of Italian descent on her father's side. Raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, she wrote and acted in backyard plays with childhood friend Hope Davis and appeared in theater productions at Dwight-Englewood School. Her mother, Lorraine Ruth Davis, a drama therapist and former actress, influenced her to pursue social causes from a young age. Sorvino excelled in high school and was accepted into Harvard University, where she studied for a year as an exchange student in Beijing, China, becoming fluent in Mandarin Chinese. She graduated magna cum laude in 1989 with a degree in East Asian studies. During her time at Harvard, she helped found the co-ed a cappella group Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones in 1985.

Sorvino made her first major screen appearance on the teen series Swans Crossing. In 1993, while working on the film Amongst Friends, she was hired as third assistant director, then promoted to casting director, assistant producer, and finally offered a lead role. Positive reviews led to more opportunities. After small roles in Quiz Show and Barcelona, she was cast in Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite (1995). Her portrayal of a happy-go-lucky prostitute earned her an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. She described the shoot as extremely stressful, saying, "I was absolutely neurotic doing Mighty Aphrodite. Every night brought a new nervous breakdown." Her other credits from that era include Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, At First Sight, and Summer of Sam. She played Marilyn Monroe in the 1996 HBO film Norma Jean & Marilyn, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination, and starred in Guillermo del Toro's Mimic (1997). In 1995, she appeared in the BBC miniseries The Buccaneers, and in 2000 she played Daisy Buchanan in a television adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

Sorvino continued working steadily into the 2000s and beyond. She led The Triumph of Love (2002), received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the Lifetime film Human Trafficking (2006), and appeared in Reservation Road (2007) alongside Mark Ruffalo. In 2008, she guest-starred on House, playing psychiatrist Cate Milton. She starred in Attack on Leningrad (2009), Multiple Sarcasms (2010), and Union Square (2012), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. That same year, she played a mother in the adaptation of Wendy Mass's children's book Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life. In 2014, she joined the final season of Psych and appeared on Falling Skies and Intruders. She acted in Lady Dynamite (2016) and the psychological thriller Look Away (2018). Sorvino has been active in the industry since 1985, with a career spanning over four decades. She stands 5'10" with brown hair and brown eyes, and her measurements are 37-26-36.
