About Mindy McCready

Edited by the community

American country music singer Mindy McCready was born Malinda Gayle McCready on November 30, 1975, in Fort Myers, Florida. She began singing in her local Pentecostal church at age 3 and graduated from high school at 16 to start her music career early. At 18, she moved to Nashville and signed with BNA Records. Her debut album, Ten Thousand Angels, released in 1996, was certified 2× Platinum and sold two million copies. It produced four chart singles, including her only Number One hit, "Guys Do It All the Time", and Top 10 hits "Ten Thousand Angels" and "A Girl's Gotta Do (What a Girl's Gotta Do)". In 1997, she was nominated for Top New Female Vocalist at the Academy of Country Music Awards. Her second album, If I Don't Stay the Night (1997), was certified Gold and sold 825,000 copies. Her third album, I'm Not So Tough (1999), was a commercial failure, and BNA dropped her. She released a self-titled album on Capitol Records in 2002 with disappointing sales, and was dropped again. After a gap, she released a fifth album, I'm Still Here, in March 2010 to critical acclaim. Her final song, "I'll See You Yesterday", was released the day after her death. Over her career, she recorded five studio albums and charted twelve singles on the Billboard country charts.

McCready's personal life attracted significant media attention. In 2008, reports surfaced of a long-term relationship with baseball star Roger Clemens that allegedly began when she was 15. Clemens admitted to a relationship but called her a "close family friend". In 2010, a pornographic video featuring McCready was released by Vivid Entertainment. She faced a series of legal issues, including a 2004 arrest for using a fake prescription for OxyContin, a 2005 DUI arrest, and multiple probation violations. She served jail time in 2007 and 2008. Her struggles with substance abuse led to appearances on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2009 and 2010. She also appeared on Celebrity Close Calls and Celebrity Ghost Stories in 2011. McCready had two sons: Zander, born in 2006, and Zayne, born in 2012. The father of her younger son, record producer David Wilson, died by suicide at her home in January 2013. She was found dead on her front porch on February 17, 2013, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, at age 37. She is interred at Alva Cemetery in Alva, Florida.
