Biography
About Michelle Thomas
Michelle Thomas was an American actress who made her mark on some of television's most beloved sitcoms of the 1980s and 1990s. Born in 1968, she began acting as a teenager and quickly gained recognition. Her first major role came in 1988 when she was cast as Justine Phillips on The Cosby Show, appearing until 1990. She then took on the part of Myra Monkhouse on Family Matters in 1993, playing the on-and-off girlfriend of Steve Urkel. She stayed with the show until 1998. Her final role was as Callie Rogers on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, which she began shortly before her death.
Thomas's path to stardom was shaped by her family. Her mother, a stage actress, was her first acting coach and helped her develop her craft. Her father was a saxophonist and founding member of the band Kool & the Gang. Encouraged by her mother's friend, Thomas entered the Miss Talented Teens pageant. She was crowned Miss Talented Teen New Jersey and then, in 1984 at age 15, won the international title in Montego Bay, Jamaica. That victory led to an appearance on Soul Train with Hal Jackson, and it opened doors in the entertainment industry.
Beyond her television work, Thomas appeared in music videos for artists like Mint Condition, Chubb Rock, and Dru Hill. She also guest-hosted Soul Train in 1996 and 1997. She was in the studio recording music in the months before her health declined. In 1997, she was diagnosed with a rare cancer. She underwent surgery in early 1998 and again in October of that year. She died on December 23, 1998, at the age of 30. She was 30 years old.
