About Melissa Coates
With a muscular 5'5" frame, blonde hair, and green eyes, Melissa Coates was a standout Canadian athlete. Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, she originally aimed for a tennis career after watching Martina Navratilova. She began weightlifting at 15 to train for tennis, and that same year she reached the finals of her first tennis competition. The following year, she won the Mid-Canada Junior Girls Championship. Her focus then shifted to bodybuilding, and in the early 1990s she won the overall lightweight category of the Windsor Physique Contest. After moving to Los Angeles, she worked two gym jobs and two bar jobs to finance her career. She earned professional status in 1995 and won the Jan Tana Classic in 1996. In 1999, she stepped away from bodybuilding to work as a model.
Coates made a name for herself in wrestling after training at Killer Kowalski's school and Ultimate Pro Wrestling's Ultimate University. She moved to Louisville, Kentucky to train in WWE's developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling. She appeared at WWE's Backlash in Chris Masters' "Masterlock Challenge," failing to break his hold. She then became head of security for Kenny Bolin's "Bolin's Services" in OVW, but soon left for World Xtreme Wrestling. She defeated Krissy Vaine and competed in the Elite 8 tournament, also having a cage match against Mercedes Martinez. Returning to OVW without a WWE contract, she faced Beth Phoenix, Mickie James, Melina Perez, and Jillian Hall, and eventually became Jillian Hall's bodyguard. She later moved to Deep South Wrestling, debuting as The Bag Lady, a homeless woman who managed The Freakin' Deacon. After a new look in February 2007, she defeated Angel Williams and feuded with Williams and Krissy Vaine before leaving for the independent circuit.
On the indies, she won the NWA/GCW Women's Championship from Daffney in May 2007. She also competed in intergender matches at NWA Anarchy, and had a notable angle with Don Williams, who declared he was "smitten like a kitten" before she struck him. She later formed the Badass Beauties tag team with Trixxie Lynn in WSU. With Claudia Reiff, she won the !Bang! Women's Tag Team Championship in 2009. She also held the IUWA Diva's Championship and won the first ever bikini contest at IUWA in March 2010. She worked for Dory Funk Jr.'s !BANG! promotion and various other promotions across the United States and Canada. Besides sports, Coates earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Lakehead University, having originally wanted to be a veterinarian.
