Biography
About Mary Mulhern
Mary Mulhern stepped into the spotlight at seventeen, dancing in the chorus of the Ziegfeld Follies. Florenz Ziegfeld soon cast her in his 1926 Broadway production, No Foolin'. The beautiful brunette went on to appear in several Vitaphone shorts, including Just Like A Man and Somewhere In Jersey. Her personal life drew just as much attention as her stage career. She fell for entertainer Harry Richman, who left her for Clara Bow. On August 12, 1930, she married actor Jack Pickford, brother of movie star Mary Pickford and widower of Olive Thomas. The union turned sour; Jack struggled with alcoholism and became abusive. After a car accident in 1931, Mary served as his full-time nurse. She filed for divorce in February 1932, describing him as "a jealous man who sleeps until 4 in the afternoon." Jack died soon after from neuritis.
Mary remarried in 1936, this time to Edward McCarty, a twenty-eight-year-old stockbroker. He died just four years later. A third marriage in 1941 ended in divorce. She also dated prize fighter Jack Dempsey and was briefly engaged to a British nobleman. As the years passed, Mary faced financial struggles and depression. She worked a series of low-paying jobs, including hostess at an ice-cream shop. In May 1955, she was committed to a mental hospital in New York, where she would remain for the rest of her life. She passed away on October 25, 1965, at the age of fifty-seven. She was buried at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York, with her grave paid for by the actors fund.
