Biography

About Marina Abramovic

Edited by the community

Marina Abramović is a pioneering Serbian performance artist whose work has shaped the genre for over five decades. She is often called the grandmother of performance art, a title earned through her intense explorations of endurance, pain, and the relationship between performer and audience. Born in Belgrade in 1946, she began her career in the 1970s, using her body as both subject and medium. One of her most famous pieces took place at MoMA in 1974, where she stood still for six hours and invited the audience to use 72 objects on her as they wished. That work, and many others, established her as a central figure in contemporary art. She has also modeled, and her striking features include black hair and green eyes. She stands 5'7" with an average build.
