About Mariette Hartley
Mariette Hartley, born Mary Loretta, came into the world on a Friday in June 1940, in Weston, Connecticut. She was raised under the strict principles of her behavioral psychologist grandfather, John B. Watson, who believed children should never be held or cuddled. That lack of warmth at home is what she says drove her to the theatre. She trained with John Houseman at the Repertory Stratford and with Eva Le Gallienne at Lucille Lortel's White Barn Theatre.
It took six years for her to land her first movie, Ride the High Country (1962), opposite Joel McCrea. She went on to make numerous TV appearances and sitcoms. Her most famous work, however, is the series of Polaroid commercials with James Garner. A tragic event marked her early years: her father died by suicide in 1962. Her family kept it a secret for 25 years, but she eventually revealed it. That disclosure brought considerable acclaim for her speaking out about the devastation. She co-founded a suicide prevention foundation based on her own experience.
Mariette continues to work in the theatre and, in 2000, hosted the syndicated Wild About Animals (1995). She has two children: Justine E. Boyriven (born 1978), an actress and singer, and Sean Boyriven (born 1975), a film-school graduate. At 86, she remains a slim, blonde, blue-eyed presence, standing 5'10". She is a straight Caucasian American who has been active since 1962, wearing many hats as an actress, producer, and writer. She is a natural blonde. She has real, natural breasts. She weighs 139 lbs, or 63 kg. She has an average build.
