Biography
About Marie Fredriksson
Marie Fredriksson was a Swedish singer who became world-famous as the lead vocalist of Roxette, the pop rock duo she formed with Per Gessle in 1986. The duo dominated charts in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with albums Look Sharp! and Joyride, and four number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. She was born in Össjö, Scania, Sweden, and began her career in the late 1970s with the punk group Strul, which even created its own music festival in 1979. After Strul dissolved, she moved through MaMas Barn and then started a solo career, releasing Het vind in 1984, Den sjunde vågen in 1986, and ...Efter stormen in 1987. The international breakthrough of Roxette paused her solo work, though she released the single 'Sparvöga' in 1989. She returned with solo albums in the 1990s, including Den ständiga resan (1992) and I en tid som vår (1996).
In 2002, Fredriksson fainted at home and was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She continued recording during rehabilitation, releasing The Change (2004) and Min bäste vän (2006), and achieved her first and only solo number one single in Sweden with 'Där du andas' in 2008. She later reunited with Gessle to record more Roxette albums and toured worldwide. She also kept making solo records in Sweden, including Nu! in 2013. Fredriksson died on 9 December 2019 from health issues related to that 2002 tumour. She was 61. She was a natural blonde with blue eyes, stood 5'6", and had a slim build. Her career stretched from 1978 to 2018, roughly 40 years of music.
