Mariah Carey is an American singer and actress, born in Greenlawn, New York, on Thursday, March 27, 1969. With sales of over 200 million records worldwide, she is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has amassed an extensive catalog, with nineteen of her songs topping the Billboard Hot 100. She holds the record for the most number-one singles by a solo artist, a female songwriter, and a female producer. Her five-octave singing range is a key part of her vocal identity. She has been active in the industry since 1988, starting around age 19, and has remained a prominent figure for 38 years.

Her heritage is mixed-race, primarily Caucasian, with African American and Venezuelan (also Afro-Venezuelan) ancestry on her father's side, and white Irish ancestry on her mother's side. She has a butterfly tattoo on her lower back and has undergone breast enhancement, likely in the late 90s after her divorce from her first husband Tommy Mottola.
