Biography
About Maria Orska
With black hair and brown eyes, Maria Orska cut a striking figure on the stages of 1920s Berlin. Born Rachel Blindermann in 1893 to a Jewish family in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, she would become one of the most celebrated actresses of German theater and cinema. Her career was brief but brilliant, spanning from 1915 to 1923, yet her impact resonated across Central Europe.
Orska moved to Vienna, Hamburg, and Berlin in 1915, just before World War I. She spoke five languages fluently, including German, French, Italian, Russian, and Polish. In Berlin, she worked with renowned directors like Rudolf Bernauer at the Hebbel Theater and Max Reinhardt, and she was famous for her roles in plays by Strindberg, Wedekind, and Pirandello. Although she gained national popularity through her film parts, theater always remained her true passion. Her first movie, Dämon und Mensch (1915), was produced by Jules Greenbaum, a pioneer of German cinema. Most of her films were produced by Alfred Maack, and she sometimes appeared under the name Maria Daisy Orska.
Her personal life was as dramatic as her stage roles. In 1920, she married Baron Hans von Bleichröder, a prominent Jewish banker, and became Baroness von Bleichröder; they divorced in 1925. Her lover, Julius Heinrich Koritschoner, a wealthy industrialist and geologist, committed suicide in 1928. Her sister Gabryela also took her own life in 1926, and her own untimely death by suicide in Vienna in 1930 raised speculation about a morphine addiction. Maria Orska's legacy endures through her extraordinary performances and the famous portrait drawn by Oskar Kokoschka in 1922.
