Biography
About Margo Stilley
Margo Stilley first drew attention for her debut film role in 9 Songs (2004), a British film that became known as the most sexually explicit mainstream movie ever produced in the UK. She performed unsimulated sexual acts with co-star Kieran O'Brien, and the film screened at Cannes and Sundance before a worldwide theatrical release. At the time, she asked director Michael Winterbottom to refer to her only by her character's name in interviews, to protect the film's artistic integrity.
Stilley was born in Conway, South Carolina, and moved to Milan as a teenager to model with Elite Model Management in February 2001. By the end of that year, she relocated to London at age 18 to pursue acting. Her early career included a role in the satirical British TV series Nathan Barley, directed by Chris Morris. She went on to appear in 19 American and British productions, including How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (2008) with Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges, Agatha Christie's Marple: Murder Is Easy, and The Trip (2010) with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, again directed by Winterbottom. She also had a recurring role in The Royals (2016).
Beyond acting, Stilley modeled for Vogue, In Style UK, The Face, Harper's Bazaar, Black Book Magazine, and Elle. She presented awards at the 2006 Elle Style Awards and the 2007 British Fashion Awards. In 2010, she was cast as Lady Furness in Madonna's film WE but withdrew over artistic differences. She converted to Judaism in 2015, citing its sense of family and history, and wrote about the experience in The Sunday Times. She later wrote commissioned articles for Esquire, including one about a gypsy band breeding white lions in Germany and another about a South Carolina biker bar where she once worked, called Suck Bang Blow. That bar is now the subject of a reality TV show she is producing.
