Biography

About Margaret Hayes

Edited by the community

A petite, slim woman at 5'4" with blonde hair, Margaret Hayes was an American actress active from 1938 to 1965. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on December 5, 1913, she began her career under the name "Dana Dale," reportedly at the suggestion of columnist Walter Winchell. As Dana Dale, she modeled, appearing in cigarette, auto, and fashion advertisements.

Hayes' screen test for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind was unsuccessful, but she received a movie contract anyway. Studio publicists recommended "Dana Edwards" as a better movie name, so she used it before eventually settling on Margaret Hayes, which she used publicly. Friends called her Maggie. She was straight and had a natural figure. She passed away on January 26, 1977, at age 63.
