About Maggie Gyllenhaal
American actress and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal was born in New York City on November 16, 1977. She is the daughter of filmmakers Stephen Gyllenhaal and Naomi Achs, and the older sister of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Her father has Swedish, English, and German descent, while her mother is Ashkenazi Jewish. She began her career as a teenager, appearing in small roles in her father's films. Her breakthrough came with the cult favorite Donnie Darko (2001), followed by roles in Adaptation and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (both 2002) and Mona Lisa Smile (2003). Gyllenhaal earned critical acclaim for her leading performances in Secretary (2002) and Sherrybaby (2006), each earning a Golden Globe nomination. After starring in World Trade Center (2006), she gained wider recognition playing Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight (2008). For her role as a single mother in Crazy Heart (2009), she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Gyllenhaal continued with a range of roles: Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010), Hysteria (2011), Won't Back Down (2012), White House Down (2013), Frank (2014), and the title role in The Kindergarten Teacher (2018). In 2021, she made her writing and directing debut with The Lost Daughter, winning the Venice International Film Festival's Best Screenplay Award and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. On television, she starred in the BBC miniseries The Honourable Woman, for which she won a Golden Globe and received a Primetime Emmy nomination, and produced and starred in the HBO series The Deuce (2017–19). She has also performed in five stage productions since 2000, including a Broadway debut in a revival of The Real Thing. Gyllenhaal has been married to actor Peter Sarsgaard since 2009; they have two daughters, born in October 2006 and April 2012. She has brown hair, blue eyes, a slim build, and stands 5'9". She is of Caucasian ethnicity.
