About Lotta Faust
American actress Lotta Faust was born Charlotte Faust on February 8, 1880, in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of Mary Hauff Faust and Frank Faust. Her first theater appearance came in The Sunshine of Paradise Alley in 1896, produced by Denman Thompson. In 1900 she appeared in The Belle of Bohemia, and in September 1901 she played Geraldine Fair in The Liberty Belles at the Madison Square Theatre. She gained popularity in The Wizard of Oz (1904–1905), where she sang the Sammy song. She later joined Joe Weber's company and appeared in Wonderland in 1905. In 1907 she was in The White Hen at the Casino Theatre, starring Louis Mann. She then joined Lew Fields' troupe for The Girl Behind The Counter (1907–1908), The Mimic World in 1908, and The Midnight Sons in 1909.
Her vaudeville career also began at the Casino Theatre, with a unique cake walk she performed with Frank Bernard starting in April 1900. In August 1908, she appeared there again, performing a Salome interpretive dance that drew both positive and negative attention. She said she experienced both horror and fascination during these performances. She was one of the most notable performers in the Salomania craze, alongside Ada Overton Walker, Eva Tanguay, and others.
Faust was married twice. Her first husband was musical director Paul Schindler; they divorced in 1902. She married singer and comedian Richard Ling shortly after, but just before her death she sued Ling for divorce. At the time of her death, she was engaged to illustrator Malcolm A. Strauss. Faust died in January 1910 at a sanitarium in New York City, from pneumonia that followed an operation. She was 29.
