About Lorna Maitland
Lorna Maitland's screen career began with an ad she answered in Daily Variety while working as an exotic dancer in Los Angeles. The ad, placed by Russ Meyer, sought the lead for his film Lorna (1964). Another actress had been cast first but was replaced because she was too small chested. Meyer accidentally overlooked Maitland's audition photos and only decided to hire her on the first day of shooting.
During the two-week Lorna shoot, Maitland was 20 and pregnant. The pregnancy increased her already very large breasts, giving them a sensually engorged look. Meyer, who had named the character after a secretary he once fancied, chose the surname Maitland to distance the character from her 'backwoods roots'. He later exclaimed 'confirmation of the dreadnoughts, box office!' when she bent over for her first closeup.
Maitland went on to appear in two more Russ Meyer films: Mudhoney (1965) and Mondo Topless (1966). Reviews of Lorna described her as 'a wanton of unparalleled emotion...unrestrained earthiness...destined to set a new standard of voluptuous beauty.' The film itself was called 'the female Tom Jones.' Maitland retired from acting after a brief three-year career. Now 82, she is remembered for her natural 34G figure and her green eyes and blonde hair.
