About Liu Wen

Edited by the community

Liu Wen first stepped onto the runway after entering the New Silk Road World model contest in Hunan in 2005, a competition she entered for the prize of a laptop. She didn't place in the top 10 nationally, but the contest led her to Beijing and a local agency, where she started with Chinese fashion shoots. Born on Wednesday, January 27, 1988, in Yongzhou, China, she grew up as an only child in a working-class family; her father worked in construction. Her mother encouraged her to take up modeling to improve her posture, since she often hunched to avoid towering over classmates. She completed high school and initially studied tourism, dreaming of becoming a tour guide, before shifting to modeling.

Known simply as "Wen" in the industry, Liu became the first Chinese model to walk the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2009, returning in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2018. She is part of the "Golden Army" of Chinese supermodels who dominated runways from 2010 onward, alongside Fei Fei Sun, Sui He, Ming Xi, and others. She walked for Chanel, Dior, Prada, Burberry, and Hermès, and in 2012 became the first East Asian spokesmodel for Estée Lauder. Her editorial work includes three American Vogue covers (2017, 2020, 2023) and the first solo Asian cover for French Vogue in 2024, plus covers for Vogue China, Harper's Bazaar, GQ, and W Magazine. She also appeared in campaigns for Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, and H&M, and was ranked #5 on models.com's Top 50 in 2012. Forbes listed her among the highest-paid models, peaking at $7 million in 2015.

Liu's mainstream acting career is limited to short films like Dior's Secret Garden (2013) and Vogue China's digital content; she has guest-starred on Chinese fashion shows and attended the Met Gala from 2015 to 2019. She maintains an active social media presence with over 5 million Instagram followers, sharing modeling shoots, travel, and advocacy for diversity in fashion. In 2018, she faced backlash for using "Happy Lunar New Year" in an Instagram post, which some Chinese netizens deemed unpatriotic. In 2019, she publicly distanced herself from Coach after the brand released a T-shirt listing Taiwan as an independent country. She keeps her personal life private, though she is reported as straight with rumored past relationships, including with South Korean singer Choi Si-won. Her net worth is estimated at $40 million. As of 2025, she splits her time between New York and Shanghai, appearing in Vogue China's October 2025 issue and a 2025 Chanel campaign. She is 5'10" tall with black hair, brown eyes, and a slim build.
