About Lily-Mae Fisher
British-born Lily-Mae Fisher came from Virginia Water, Surrey, and built a life of uncommon service and sport. She was the UK's only serving female Royal Navy Commando, an achievement she reached after completing the 16-week All Arms Commando Course. She was one of only seven women in British military history to earn the green beret. Her death came at 31, on Saturday 6 June 2026, when a Merlin Mk4 from 846 Naval Air Squadron crashed at Sourton Down, Devon, during her final assessment of flying training. Her Pilot's Wings were due to be awarded that same month.
Her path to the Navy was anything but direct. She earned an MSc in Geology from Imperial College London in 2016, then spent two years as a geologist with British Petroleum. She commissioned into the Royal Navy in 2019. Before that, she had competed as a junior international for England in lacrosse and pole vault. As a sportswoman, she was an accomplished triathlete and ultramarathon runner. She had recently completed a 65km race with 3,000m of elevation. Her athletic build and natural curves were part of a disciplined, active life.
She was a former military professional and a former sportswoman, with brown hair and a straight orientation. Her story is one of rare accomplishment cut short, but the record of her service and sport remains clear. She is remembered for what she did, not just where she was from. She was British, and she was extraordinary in a quiet, determined way. Her legacy is one of grit, talent, and dedication to both country and sport.
