About Lily Elsie
Lily Elsie, born in Armley, West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, began her career as a child star in the 1890s. She was a British actress and musician, known for her beauty and charm on stage. Elsie's mother, Charlotte Elizabeth Hodder, was a dressmaker who operated a lodging-house, and her father was a theatre worker. She became Elsie Cotton after her mother's marriage to William Thomas Cotton in 1891. Her uncle, Wilfred Cotton, married actress Ada Reeve.
Elsie's early career included appearances in concerts, pantomimes, and musical comedies. She adopted the stage name Lily Elsie around 1900. Her breakthrough came in 1907 when she created the title role in the English-language production of The Merry Widow in London. The show was a tremendous success, running 778 performances, and made Elsie a major star. She went on to star in other successful operettas and musicals, including The Dollar Princess (1909), A Waltz Dream (1911), and The Count of Luxembourg (1911). She was admired for her beauty and became one of the most photographed women of the Edwardian era.
After her marriage to Major John Ian Bullough in 1911, Elsie retired from the stage for several years, returning only for charity performances and a few plays. Her return to performing in 1927 was brief, and she retired permanently after The Truth Game in 1928-1929. Her health declined, and she spent her final years in nursing homes and hospitals. She died in 1962 at St. Andrew's Hospital in London, aged 76. She was just 5' 4" tall, with brown hair, blue eyes, and a slim build. She was known for her shyness, even as an adult, and her beauty was often compared to the Venus de Milo.
