Biography

About Lillian Leitzel

Edited by the community

A petite figure, just 4'9" tall with brown hair and brown eyes, Lillian Leitzel commanded the circus ring with astonishing grace. Born in Breslau, Germany in 1892, this German artist and sportswoman became one of the most celebrated trapeze artists of her era. Her natural figure, weighing only 95 lbs, allowed her to perform feats of strength and agility that seemed almost superhuman.

Leitzel's career was marked by incredible daring and skill on the flying trapeze. She was known for her signature one-arm plange, a move few others could attempt. Tragically, her life was cut short when she died on February 15, 1931, at the age of 39, following a fall during a performance in Copenhagen. Her legacy endures as one of circus history's brightest, brief stars.
