About Leylah Fernandez

Edited by the community

An athletic 5'6" frame, 106 lbs, with black hair and brown eyes, Leylah Fernandez cuts a focused figure on court. She is a 23-year-old Canadian professional tennis player of mixed-race (primarily Asian) ethnicity, born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Fernandez turned professional in 2019, starting her career at around 16 years old, and has been active for seven years. Her career-high singles ranking is No. 15 by the WTA, achieved on 6 June 2022. She has won two WTA Tour titles, both at the Monterrey Open, and reached the US Open final in 2021 as a 19-year-old, where she finished runner-up to Emma Raducanu. Along the way, she defeated three top-5 players, including defending champion Naomi Osaka.

In 2022, Fernandez began the season at the Adelaide International, advancing to the round of 16 where she lost to Iga Świątek in straight sets. She then suffered an opening-round loss at the Australian Open as the 23rd seed. In March, she successfully defended her Monterrey Open title, reaching her fourth final and winning her second WTA title. She defeated Anna Karolína Schmiedlová, Zheng Qinwen, Wang Qiang, and Beatriz Haddad Maia to reach the final, where she beat Camila Osorio in three sets, saving five championship points in the final set. She also played doubles with her sister, Bianca Fernandez, but they lost in the first round.

Later that season, Fernandez entered the Indian Wells Open, receiving a bye in the first round and advancing to the third round after Amanda Anisimova retired. She defeated Shelby Rogers in three sets, then lost to defending champion Paula Badosa in the fourth round. In doubles, partnering with Alizé Cornet, she reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champions Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan. At the French Open, she beat Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and 2019 semifinalist Amanda Anisimova in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, before losing to Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinals. That match resulted in a Grade-III fractured foot, forcing her to miss Wimbledon. She returned at the Canadian Open, losing in the second round to eventual finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia, and then lost in the first round at Cincinnati. At the US Open, seeded 14th, she beat Océane Dodin in the first round but fell to Liudmila Samsonova in the second, which caused her to fall outside the top 30. In doubles, she reached the second round with Daria Saville, and in mixed doubles she reached the quarterfinals with Jack Sock.

In 2023, Fernandez started the season by reaching the quarterfinals at the ASB Classic. At the Australian Open, she won her first-round match against Alizé Cornet, then lost to Caroline Garcia in a hard-fought second-round match, having set points in both sets. Fernandez is sponsored by Canadian brand Lululemon for apparel and by French brand Babolat for racquets. She became Lululemon's first global brand ambassador in tennis in January 2022, replacing her previous apparel sponsor Asics, which she continued to use for footwear until Lululemon launched its tennis footwear line. She also has sponsorship deals with Telcel/Claro, Birchbox, Morgan Stanley, EasyPost, USANA, Microsure, and Cambridge Global Payments. She is a brand ambassador for Flair Airlines alongside fellow Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Felix Auger Aliassime, and she became a Google ambassador in Canada for the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, as well as a Gatorade Canada ambassador. Fernandez is a fan of Real Madrid and Manchester City, and she speaks fluent English, French, and Spanish.
