Biography

About Lee Miller

Edited by the community

Standing 5'10" with a slim build, Lee Miller was an American photographer and photojournalist whose life story is as remarkable as her images. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in April 1907, she first gained attention as a fashion model in New York City during the 1920s. Her blonde hair and green eyes made her a striking figure in front of the camera, but soon she moved behind it, traveling to Paris to become a fashion and fine-art photographer.

During World War II, Miller served as a war correspondent for Vogue, covering the London Blitz, the liberation of Paris, and the concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau. Her photographs from that era are considered some of her most powerful and enduring work. After the war, she married the artist Roland Penrose, becoming Lady Penrose, and her later years were spent in relative obscurity until her son, Antony Penrose, discovered and promoted her extensive archive of work.

Miller's reputation as an artist in her own right was largely established posthumously. In 1985, Antony Penrose published the first biography of her, titled *The Lives of Lee Miller*. That biography later served as the basis for the 2023 film *Lee*, directed by Ellen Kuras and starring Kate Winslet as Miller. The film dramatizes many of the events she documented during the war, including her time with colleague David Scherman, Vogue editor Audrey Withers, and her husband Roland Penrose. Miller passed away on July 21, 1977, at the age of 70, leaving behind a complex legacy as both a model and a photographer.
