About Lauryn Hill

Edited by the community

Lauryn Hill is a singular force in American music, a woman whose voice and vision reshaped hip hop and R&B. Born in East Orange, New Jersey, on May 26, 1975, she has been active in the industry since 1988, starting her career as a teenager. Over 38 years, she has worn many hats: activist, actress, influencer, musician, and producer.

Her rise began in the early 1990s. She appeared on the soap opera As the World Turns and starred in the off-Broadway play Club XII. Her film debut in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) won praise. In 1990, she co-founded the Fugees with Wyclef Jean and Pras. Their album The Score (1996) hit number one on the Billboard 200, making her the first woman to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album. It featured the hits "Killing Me Softly" and "Ready or Not."

As a solo artist, Hill broke new ground. Her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), was a critical and commercial triumph. It debuted at number one, earned a diamond certification, and included the chart-topping single "Doo Wop (That Thing)." At the 41st Grammy Awards, she set a record for the most nominations in a single night for a female artist and became the first rapper to win Album of the Year. In 1999, she graced the cover of Time magazine and received a President's Award from the NAACP. Her production work extended to Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige. MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 (2002) reached the top five and went platinum. In 2014, her debut album became the first by a female rapper to be added to the National Recording Registry.

Her legacy is marked by numerous accolades: eight Grammy Awards, the most for any female rapper, and rankings as one of the greatest singers and rappers of all time. Today, she continues to engage her audience, with 1.8 million followers on Instagram.
