Lana Wood

Wood was born Svetlana Gurdin to Russian immigrant parents, Nikolai Stephanovich Zakharenko and Maria Stepanovna Zakharenko. Her parents had fled Russia as children during the Russian Civil War. Her father's family left Vladivostok after her grandfather was killed in a street fight in 1918, and they settled in Vancouver before moving to San Francisco. Her mother's family, which owned soap and candle factories in Barnaul, left Russia in 1918 after her eldest son was killed by the Red Army and settled in Harbin, China. Her mother married there and had a daughter, Olga, with her first husband. When Nikolai and Maria married, they brought Olga into the household. The couple had two daughters together: Natalia, later known as Natalie, and Svetlana, called Lana.

When Natalie started acting as a child, her parents changed the family surname to "Wood", after director Irving Pichel's friend Sam Wood. When Lana made her film debut in The Searchers (1956), her mother agreed to use "Wood" for Lana as well, building on Natalie's recognition. Wood is listed in James Bond Girls.
