About Lady Miss Kier
Lady Miss Kier, born Kierin Magenta Kirby, is an American singer, songwriter, DJ, and activist known for her bold, retro-futuristic style. Her signature look featured zip-up catsuits, platform shoes, and a flipped hairdo, drawing from exaggerated 1960s fashion. She rose to fame as the vocalist of the band Deee-Lite, whose sound blended house, techno, and electronic dance music.
Kier met Ukrainian-born Dmitry Brill, also known as Supa DJ Dmitry, in 1982, when she designed and made him silver platform boots and a glitter blue spacesuit for his band Shazork. In 1986, she began writing and singing with Brill, forming Deee-Lite. Shortly after their first show, they were joined by Towa Tei, a Japanese DJ of Korean descent. The trio combined Kier's vocals and writing with Brill's sampling and Tei's mixing. Before the band signed a seven-album deal with Elektra Records, Kier worked as a waitress and go-go dancer to make ends meet.
Deee-Lite achieved worldwide success in 1990 with their debut album World Clique and the hit single "Groove Is in the Heart." At the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, the band earned nominations for Video of the Year and Best New Artist. Within the group, Kier adopted the larger-than-life alter ego "Lady Miss Kier."
Beyond music, Kier is a social, environmental, and human rights activist. She is a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights and identifies as a straight ally, often appearing as a host, performer, or DJ at pride parades. She supports abortion rights and women's rights, and in 1991 she appeared in a TV infomercial promoting pro-abortion rights alongside artists like Kim Gordon, MC Lyte, and Crystal Waters.
Now 62, she continues to perform as a DJ and remains an influential figure in music and activism.
