Born Linda Bell Viera Caballero on March 9, 1969, in Las Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico, she moved with her parents to the South Bronx in New York City soon after birth. Her grandmother, with whom they initially lived, gave her the stage name La India because of her dark features and long, straight, black hair. Viera began singing as a young girl and even took brief opera training. She describes herself as a feminist, having witnessed domestic violence from her father. Those early experiences shaped both her music and her public identity.
Over the years, La India has built a substantial following online. Her Instagram account has attracted more than 8.5 million followers, and she also maintains a YouTube channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. From her roots in Puerto Rico to stages across genres, she has remained a consistent and influential voice in Latin music for over 40 years.
