About Kim Deal
Slim with hazel eyes and brown hair, Kim Deal is a 65-year-old American musician born in Dayton, Ohio, United States. She has been active in the music industry from 1986 to the present, spanning about 40 years. Deal is known primarily as a bassist and vocalist, with a career that has left a lasting mark on alternative rock.
Deal first gained prominence as the original bassist and co-vocalist for the Pixies, a role she held from 1986 to 1993 and later from 2004 to 2013. During her initial stint with the band, she performed under the stage name Mrs. John Murphy on the albums Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. After the Pixies' hiatus, she formed the Breeders in 1989 with Tanya Donelly, Josephine Wiggs, and Britt Walford. The band's debut album, Pod, was released, and later her twin sister, Kelley Deal, joined the lineup.
The Pixies disbanded in early 1993, leading Deal to focus on the Breeders. That same year, the band released Last Splash, which achieved platinum status and included the hit single "Cannonball." Following a hiatus in 1994 due to Kelley's rehabilitation, Deal adopted another stage name, Tammy Ampersand, and formed the short-lived band the Amps, releasing the album Pacer in 1995. After her own rehabilitation, she reformed the Breeders with a new lineup for Title TK (2002) and Mountain Battles (2008). She also returned to the Pixies when they reunited in 2004. In 2013, she left the Pixies to concentrate on the Breeders, whose classic lineup reunited for tours celebrating the 20th anniversary of Last Splash. The Breeders released their fifth album, All Nerve, in 2018, reuniting the Deals, Wiggs, and Macpherson for the first time since Last Splash. Deal continues to be an influential figure in rock music.
