Katherine Moennig is an American actress, producer, director, and activist, born on Thursday 29th of December 1977 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. She is best known for her role as Shane McCutcheon in The L Word (2004) and its sequel series The L Word: Generation Q (2019). Her career began with a TV role in Young Americans (2000), playing Jacqueline 'Jake' Pratt. In 2006, she made her Off-Broadway debut in 'Guardians', opposite Lee Pace. From 2013, she appeared in Ray Donovan as an assistant to the eponymous character. Her filmography includes a notable role as a trans woman in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Season 4, episode 21, 'Fallacy'). She is known for choosing non-traditional, often gender-bending roles.

Born to William H. Moennig III, a violin maker, and Mary Zahn, a Broadway dancer, Katherine has Irish and German ancestry. She is the niece of producer Bruce Paltrow, actress Blythe Danner, and actor Harry Danner, and the first cousin of director Jake Paltrow and actresses Hillary Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow. At 18, she moved to New York City and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She is trained in fencing. She has said that if she weren't an actress, she'd be a marine biologist or in the FBI. As a little girl, she wanted to be a doorman.

Katherine is openly lesbian, having come out in 2019 after years of speculation. She has been married to Brazilian film director and musician Ana Rezende since 2017.
