Biography
About Katharine Hepburn
Katharine Hepburn was an American actress whose career in film, stage, and television spanned seven decades. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she was a redhead with blue eyes and a slim build, standing 5'8" with measurements of 33–22–33. Her work ranged from screwball comedy to literary drama, and she earned four Academy Awards for Best Actress, a record for any performer. In 1999, the American Film Institute named her the greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema. She was also known for her headstrong independence, spirited personality, and outspokenness. Hepburn was bisexual and, in her later years, lived independently after a brief early marriage. She died in 2003 at the age of 96.
Hepburn began acting while at Bryn Mawr College, and favorable Broadway reviews brought her to Hollywood. Her third film, Morning Glory (1933), won her an Oscar, but a series of commercial failures followed, including Bringing Up Baby (1938). She engineered her own comeback by buying out her RKO contract and acquiring the rights to The Philadelphia Story, which she sold on the condition that she star. The film was a box office success. In the 1940s she signed with MGM and began a 26-year screen partnership with Spencer Tracy, which produced nine films. She later took on Shakespearean stage roles and played mature, independent women in films like The African Queen (1951). She won additional Oscars for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), and On Golden Pond (1981). In the 1970s, she shifted to television films, making her final screen appearance at 87.
Hepburn shunned the Hollywood publicity machine and famously wore trousers before they were fashionable. She was raised by wealthy, progressive parents in Connecticut. Her independent characters and unconventional lifestyle made her an enduring cultural figure of 20th-century America.
