About Julia Graham

Edited by the community

Julia Graham was a Musician born on Monday 15th of February 1915 in the United States, and she died on Monday 15th of July 1935 at the age of 20. Her father, Harry Graham, worked for the state's road commission, and she was raised in Sistersville, West Virginia. From a very young age she dreamed of being a movie star, performing in local plays and singing in her church's choir. After graduating from high school in 1933 she worked in a library, saved money, and moved to Hollywood to pursue acting.

Shortly after arriving, a man pretending to be a casting agent assaulted her. She spent months looking for work but got no roles, and her depression deepened. In March 1934 she attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills. Producer Earl Carroll heard about the attempt and offered her a screen test, which led to a bit part in the 1934 musical Murder At The Vanities. She also appeared in Love In Bloom and The Crusades, the latter directed by Cecil B. Demille. Despite these early successes, depression continued, and she tried to take her own life again in Fall 1934. She then began an affair with Benjamin F. Reynolds, a married cameraman. On July 15, 1935, she stayed overnight at his apartment and, after he fell asleep, killed herself with his gun. A note read: "Soon I shall die I can't live but I'm too confused." She was twenty. Julia was buried in her hometown of Sistersville, West Virginia.
