About Joni Mitchell

Edited by the community

Joni Mitchell helped redefine popular music as a literary art form. Born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada in 1943, she emerged from the 1960s folk scene. Her poetic lyrics and unusual guitar tunings set her apart. She moved restlessly across folk, pop, rock, and jazz.

Her landmark albums include Blue, Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, and Hejira. Her best-known songs include "Both Sides, Now," "Big Yellow Taxi," "Woodstock," "Chelsea Morning," and "The Circle Game." She is Canadian and American. Mitchell has received multiple Grammy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize. She is also a painter and has been active since 1962. She has blonde hair, green eyes, and a slim build.
