About Jo Pavey

Edited by the community

Jo Pavey, a former British long-distance runner, has a lean, average build, brown hair, and stands 5'4". She has been a fixture in British athletics since 1997, and her career is marked by remarkable longevity and achievement. As a five-time Olympian, she represented Great Britain in every Olympic Games from 2000 to 2016, making her the only British runner and track event athlete to compete in five games.

Pavey's most celebrated moment came at the 2014 European Championships in Zürich, where she won the 10,000 m gold medal just ten months after giving birth to her second child. At 40 years and 325 days old, she became the oldest female European champion in history. She also won silver in the 10,000 m at the 2012 European Championships and two Commonwealth Games medals: silver in the 5000 m in Melbourne 2006 and bronze in Glasgow 2014. At the global level, her best results include fourth in the 10,000 m at the 2007 World Championships and fifth in the 5000 m at the 2004 Olympics. In 2017, following a doping disqualification of another athlete, she was elevated to the bronze medal in the 10,000 m from the 2007 World Championships, her first World Championship medal. Her personal bests are 4:01.79 (1500 m), 8:31.27 (3000 m), 14:39.96 (5000 m), 30:53.20 (10,000 m), and 2:28:24 (marathon). She ranks second on the UK all-time list in both the 5000 m and 10,000 m, behind Paula Radcliffe. Pavey is coached by her husband Gavin Pavey, and the couple has two children. She was appointed MBE for her services to athletics. She retired from professional competition, but her legacy remains one of enduring excellence.
