Biography

About Jill Ireland

Edited by the community

Jill Ireland was a British actress whose career spanned more than three decades. Born in London in April 1936, she began acting in the mid-1950s with bit parts in films including Simon and Laura (1955) and Three Men in a Boat (1956). She was 5'7" tall, had blonde hair and blue eyes, and a slim build with measurements of 37–23–37. Her natural C-cup bust was a notable part of her appearance.

Ireland's personal life was as eventful as her career. In 1957, she married actor David McCallum, whom she met while working on the film Hell Drivers. They had three sons: Paul, Valentine, and Jason (who was adopted). The couple appeared together in five episodes of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. between 1964 and 1967. Ireland and McCallum divorced in 1967. In 1968, she married Charles Bronson, with whom she had met years earlier on the set of The Great Escape. Together they had a daughter, Zuleika, and adopted a daughter, Katrina. Ireland and Bronson remained married until her death, and she made fifteen films with him.

Ireland was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984. After her diagnosis, she wrote two books about her battle with the disease and was writing a third at the time of her death. She became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and testified before the U.S. Congress about medical costs in 1988. That same year, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award from President Ronald Reagan. Ireland died of breast cancer at her home in Malibu, California, in May 1990, at age 54. She was cremated, and her ashes were placed in a cane that Charles Bronson had buried with him at Brownsville Cemetery when he died. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6751 Hollywood Boulevard.
