About Jan Sterling

Edited by the community

Jan Sterling stood 5'5" with a slim 36–23–36 figure, brown hair, and blue eyes. Born Jane Sterling Adriance on April 3, 1921, in Manhattan, New York, she became an American actress known for films, television, and stage. Her career spanned from 1938 to 1981, and she was most active in the 1950s, often playing hard and determined characters. She joined the Actors Studio and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in The High and the Mighty (1954), also earning an Academy Award nomination for the same role. Her portrayal of the opportunistic wife opposite Kirk Douglas in Ace in the Hole (1951) is often cited as her best performance. Although her film career declined in the 1960s, she continued with television and theatre roles until her last film appearance in 1981.

Sterling's early life was privileged; her father was an architect and advertising executive, and she attended private schools before moving to Europe and South America. She studied with private tutors in London and Paris and attended Fay Compton's dramatic school in London. A notable anecdote from 1968 involved her using airfare to buy lingerie and booking a steamship instead, narrowly avoiding the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. Returning to New York as a teenager, she began acting on Broadway in 1938 under variations of her name, including Jane Sterling. She made her film debut in 1947's Tycoon, billed as Jane Darian, and later changed her name to Jan Sterling at Ruth Gordon's suggestion. Over the years, she appeared in films like Caged (1950), Union Station (1950), The Mating Season (1951), and High School Confidential (1958), and on television in anthology series and shows like Wagon Train, Bonanza, and The Guiding Light.

Sterling married twice: first to actor John Merivale in 1941 (divorced 1948), then to actor Paul Douglas in 1950, who died in 1959. She later had a long-term relationship with Sam Wanamaker. In her later years, she faced health issues including diabetes, a broken hip, and strokes. She died on March 26, 2004, at age 82, at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. Her son had passed away three months earlier. Despite a career that slowed after the 1960s, Sterling left a lasting mark on mid-century American entertainment.
