About Hulya Marquardt

Edited by the community

Hülya Marquardt, a fashion boutique owner from Stuttgart, Germany, is the only legless boutique owner in Germany. Born with deformed hands and legs, she underwent 21 operations during her first six years and spent much of her childhood in hospital. At 18, she developed sepsis from screws used to fix her legs, leading to the amputation of both legs above the knees. She uses a wheelchair, but often finds it more convenient to crawl, use a skateboard, or a small trolley. Her hand deformities make gripping objects difficult, so she needs help with some tasks.

Now 37, Hülya is married to Dennis Marquardt, 36, and they welcomed their son in May. Motherhood brought new challenges, but she manages remarkably. She breastfeeds full-time, changes diapers, and does everything a mother with limbs does, just differently. Her father-in-law built her a basket on wheels with a mattress so she can transport her baby while crawling. Their house isn't specially equipped, but they've adapted. Initially scared, she now handles it well, having grown used to doing things in her own way.

Hülya's Instagram, where she documents daily life as a disabled woman and new mum, has gained her 349k followers. She regularly receives messages from followers worldwide who find her photos motivating and inspiring. Her husband Dennis inspired her to travel and took many pictures of their trips, building her confidence. She often surprises customers by serving them in her wheelchair at her boutique. Hülya maintains a positive attitude, saying she never felt different, even after her amputations. She focused on her studies and built a fulfilling life as a mum, wife, boutique owner, and full-time employee, defying doctors' early expectations that she'd need lifelong care. She believes her achievements came from always looking forward and believing in what was possible.
