Biography
About Hilda Ferguson
Hilda Ferguson was an American actress who moved from the stage to the screen during a brief but eventful career in the 1920s. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the youngest of six children in her family. At fifteen, she eloped with a dental student, and a year later gave birth to a daughter. She left her husband and child to pursue entertainment in New York City around 1921.
Her first noticed appearance was as a member of the "Bathing Beach Revue" at Murray's Cabaret in June 1922. That same year, she landed a part in The Music Box Revue on Broadway, which boosted her career. She went on to appear in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923, 1924, and 1925, becoming known as a Ziegfeld girl. Her last major show was the musical Yours Truly in 1927. Her signature act was the "Great Shimmy Dance," which she performed in a feathered headdress.
Ferguson's personal life was consistently turbulent. In 1923, her roommate was murdered, and Ferguson was briefly considered a suspect, though the case was never solved. She had numerous romantic links, including to actors and a bootlegger. She struggled with alcoholism and was described as "the blonde darling of the underworld." She died in 1933 from peritonitis, worsened by years of heavy drinking, and was buried in an unmarked grave in Baltimore. Her life was short, but her story remains a colorful chapter in early 20th-century entertainment.
