Biography
About Hedy Lamarr
Austrian-born American actress Hedy Lamarr, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna on November 9, 1914, became one of Hollywood's Golden Age stars. She began acting around age 15 in the 1930s and remained active until 1958, a career spanning 28 years. Her early work in Czechoslovakia included the controversial film Ecstasy (1933), which drew attention for her topless scenes. After fleeing her first husband, an Austrian ammunition manufacturer, she traveled to Paris and then London, where MGM chief Louis B. Mayer offered her a contract. Her Hollywood breakthrough came with Algiers (1938). She went on to appear in MGM films like Lady of the Tropics (1939), Boom Town (1940), H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941), and White Cargo (1942). Her greatest success was playing Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949). She also worked in television before her final film, The Female Animal (1958). In 1960, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She died on January 19, 2000, at age 85.
Beyond acting, Lamarr co-developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes during World War II. Working with composer George Antheil, she helped devise spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to counter Axis jamming. This invention, though not widely used at the time, later influenced modern communications.
Lamarr stood 5'7" with a slim build and natural bust. She had brown hair, blue eyes, and measurements of 34-23-35. Her on-screen work included topless nudity, but she never performed full solo or partnered scenes. She was straight. Despite her passing, she remains remembered as both a film star and an inventor. Her Instagram following, though modest, reflects enduring curiosity about her life.
