About Greta Thunberg
Greta Thunberg is a Swedish activist, writer, and influencer who became the face of the global youth climate movement. Her activism began at 15 when she persuaded her parents to adopt lifestyle choices that reduced her family's carbon footprint. In August 2018, she started skipping school to protest outside the Swedish parliament, holding a "Skolstrejk för Klimatet" sign and demanding stronger action on climate change. After the election, she vowed to strike every Friday until Sweden complied with the Paris agreement. Her blunt speaking style and youth fueled her rise to global icon.
Her solo protest sparked a worldwide movement. Students organized similar strikes, and by 2019, coordinated protests involved over a million students each. To avoid carbon-intensive flying, she sailed on a carbon-free boat from England to New York to address the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit. In her speech, she scolded world leaders for their inaction. After graduating high school in 2023, her activism grew more assertive, including civil disobedience that led to arrests and an acquittal. Her causes have expanded to include other issues, and she has taken a pro-Hamas stance on the Israel–Hamas war.
Thunberg's influence is often called the "Greta effect." She has been named one of Time's 100 most influential people, the youngest Time Person of the Year in 2019, and a Forbes list of the world's 100 most powerful women. She has received Nobel Peace Prize nominations. In 2021, she tweeted a toolkit for farmers protesting in India, leading to accusations of conspiracy and an arrest of an ally. Her parents are opera singer Malena Ernman and actor Svante Thunberg, and her grandfather was actor Olof Thunberg. She is the older sister of Beata. She has been open about her depression and ASD.
