About Gay Orlova

Edited by the community

With her shapely figure and sharp tongue, Gay Orlova was a Russian-born actress whose life became a fixture in gossip columns. Born on Friday the 29th of January 1915 in Petrograd, Russian Federation, she came to America at sixteen, chasing what columnists called the American Dream. She soon appeared on Broadway and in newspapers and magazines, and her nationality and Caucasian ethnicity were part of her public image. Orlova was straight and worked as an actress, though her career often took second place to her personal dramas.

When her visa ran out, she married a balcony usher to stay in the United States. He fell madly in love with her, but she did it purely to extend her time in the country. By 1935 she had met Charles "Lucky" Luciano, and their scandalous affair during the spring of 1936 made her infamous. Lucky was soon shipped off to prison for his alleged role in nationwide prostitution, and Orlova was booted out of America, landing in Paris. The relationship was said to have broken down by 1938, but she still hoped for a "Lucky" reunion and tried to see him when he was released in 1946. Her request was refused.

Orlova tried to find love with other men, but columnists wrote that she never gave up on Lucky. She turned down a marriage proposal from a Wall Streeter in the hopes of winning him back. Lucky, however, had settled in Italy and met Igea Lissoni in 1948. Just two years after his release, Orlova's fairy tale life unraveled completely. She cycled through jobs and failed marriages, and on Thursday the 12th of February 1948, she died at age 33. Her life, always fodder for gossip, ended in tragedy.
