About Freylaverse
Freya Hammar, known online as Freylaverse, is a microbiologist, artist, and content creator who grew up in New Zealand. She has built a multidisciplinary career spanning science communication, digital art, writing, and community leadership. Her work focuses on making science accessible through storytelling and creative expression.
Hammar earned a master's degree in biotechnology and specialized in microbiology, with a particular focus on the genetics and biodiversity of marine microbial life. She has worked as a scientific illustrator for several years, combining artistic skill with scientific accuracy. Her podcast, Beneath the Surface, examines science and identity through narrative-driven discussions. She also illustrated Swim Down: Finding Neurodivergent Identity in the Depths, a project that blends visual storytelling with discussions of neurodivergence.
In addition to her scientific career, Hammar is an accomplished digital artist, primarily creating portraits of women, as well as environment and concept art. She is also a writer of original fiction and fan works, though much of her writing remains unpublished. She has been involved in the Creatures community, centered around the 1990s artificial life simulation series, since childhood. She formally joined the modern community in 2010 and became one of its most active organizers. She helps manage The Norn Nebula Discord server, owns and administers Creatures Discord, and operates the fan resource website creatures.neocities.org. She founded The Norn Swarm in 2023 and has led the Creatures Community Spirit Festival (CCSF) for four consecutive years, the first individual to do so. Her long-standing interest in artificial life led to a professional collaboration with Steve Grand, the creator of the original Creatures series, on his latest life simulation project.
