Biography
About Elvira Quintana
Elvira Quintana was born in Bajadoz, Spain, in November 1935. Her father was killed during the Spanish Civil War, and she and her mother fled to Mexico as political refugees when she was five. She enrolled in the Instituto Teatral y Cinematográfica de ANDA, the Mexican actors' union acting school, working to pay her tuition. Even before completing the three-year course, she landed bit parts and extra roles in films. She also worked on stage and in radio early in her career.
Quintana had a prominent nose and underwent rhinoplasty to reduce its size. After her nose job, her career began to bloom. She also enlarged her bust with liquid silicone injections. She became a star in 1958 with her singing and dancing in Bolero inmortal, playing a famous stage performer who remains romantically unfulfilled. Quintana rarely appeared in serious dramatic fare after that, mostly starring in rancheras, contemporary comedies, and Westerns. In the 1960s, she was a regular on the television show "Noches Tapatías" and appeared in TV movies and on radio. She became a top star in musicals and released albums of diverse musical genres.
Quintana never married. She once said she was looking for a "complete gentleman," and if she found him, "I would get married and retire to the peace of home." She was struck by pancreatitis in the fall of 1967, which led to kidney problems and dialysis. Released from the hospital in February 1968, she returned to work, resuming her recording career. She also appeared in 50 chapters of the radio novella "El Hipócrita" for XEW until illness forced her to stop. In June 1968, she sought specialist care and considered going to the United States for treatment, possibly a kidney transplant. On August 8, 1968, she suffered a cerebral embolism caused by hypertension related to her kidney problems and died at age 32. It was rumored that her fatal illness was caused by the silicone injections, though a direct link was never established. Three years after her death, her mother had a book of her poetry, "Poesías de Elvira Quintana," published, containing 200 poems; poetry-writing was one of her favorite pastimes.
