Biography

About Elsie Mackay

Edited by the community

She had dark looks, a graceful manner, and was habitually well-dressed and bejewelled. Elsie Mackay was a woman of many talents: actress, jockey, interior decorator, and pioneering aviator. Born on 21 August 1893 in Simla, West Bengal, India, she was the daughter of James Mackay, 1st Earl of Inchcape, a British colonial administrator who later chaired the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). Her nationality was Indian, and she was of Caucasian ethnicity.

After eloping with actor Dennis Wyndham in 1917, she was reportedly disinherited by her family. She appeared on stage and screen under the name Poppy Wyndham from 1919 to 1921. In her short acting career, she also made history as the first woman jockey in England, riding a dozen winners. Her marriage was annulled in 1922, and she returned to her family, becoming an interior decorator. She designed lavish interiors for P&O ships, including the RMS Maloja in 1923 and the 'R' class ships of 1925, as well as the RMS Viceroy of India in 1927.

She took up flying in 1923, earning her pilot's licence at the De Havilland Flying School, and was determined to be the first woman to fly the Atlantic. She even survived a dangerous stunt when her safety strap broke during an outside loop. In 1928, she attempted the transatlantic crossing with Captain Walter G. R. Hinchliffe in a Stinson Detroiter named Endeavour. They took off from RAF Cranwell on 13 March 1928 and were last seen over Ireland. She was 34 years old. A single wheel from the aircraft later washed ashore in Ireland.
