About Ellen DeGeneres
Ellen DeGeneres, who first drew national attention for her stand-up comedy on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1986, later became one of the most recognizable faces in American television. Born on January 26, 1958, in Metairie, Louisiana, she grew up in a Christian family with her brother Vance. Her parents divorced when she was 13, and she moved to Atlanta, Texas, with her mother. She attended the University of New Orleans to study communications but left after one semester to pursue comedy, starting in the early 1980s.
Her sitcom Ellen (1994-1998) made history in 1997 when her character came out as gay, a pioneering moment for LGBTQ+ representation on TV. The show also helped cement her as a household name. She then hosted The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which premiered in 2003 and ran for over 18 years, winning multiple Emmy Awards. She has also hosted the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards. A published author, she wrote "My Point... And I Do Have One" and "Seriously... I'm Kidding."
Beyond entertainment, Ellen is known for her humanitarian work, which earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. She has been married to actress Portia de Rossi since 2008. She is a vegan and an animal lover, involved in several animal welfare organizations. At 68, she remains active across platforms: she has 133.8 million Instagram followers, 14.5 million TikTok followers, and 38.0 million YouTube subscribers. A slim American with blonde hair and blue eyes, she stands 5'7" and has a sun tattoo on her ankle.
