Biography
About Edie Sedgwick
Edie Sedgwick was an American actress, business woman, model, and supermodel whose brief career in the 1960s made her a symbol of the era's counterculture. Born into a wealthy and prominent family, she became known for her beauty, style, and association with Andy Warhol. Her life was marked by both glamour and tragedy, and she died at the age of 28 in 1971.
Edie was born in Santa Barbara, California, on April 20, 1943, the fourth of five daughters in a family that struggled with mental illness. Her father, Francis Minturn Sedgwick, was a rancher who had bipolar disorder, and her mother, Alice Delano De Forest, came from a wealthy family. The Sedgwicks had a long lineage, including Judge Theodore Sedgwick, a prominent figure in early American politics. Edie's childhood on a 3,000-acre ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley was marked by privilege but also by trauma, including reports of abuse and the mental health struggles of her siblings. She was educated at a private school on the ranch and later attended Radcliffe College, where she studied sculpture.
In 1965, Edie met Andy Warhol and quickly became a central figure at his studio, The Factory. She appeared in several of his films, including "Beauty No. 2," and was dubbed "the queen of The Factory." Her on-screen persona drew comparisons to Marilyn Monroe, and she graced the pages of Vogue and Life magazine. However, her career was overshadowed by her struggles with drug addiction, which worsened over time. She left Warhol's circle in 1966 and made a few more film appearances, including in "Ciao! Manhattan," but her life became increasingly chaotic. She spent time in hospitals and had run-ins with the law. In 1971, she married Michael Post, but she died later that year from an overdose of barbiturates, ruled as "Accident/Suicide."
